AAI requires that all members of Council and AAI committees (standing and ad hoc), the Editors-in-Chief, Deputy/Section Editors, and Senior Editors of any AAI scientific publication, abstract programming chairs, and members of the AAI staff (all hereinafter “AAI representatives”) shall avoid any Conflict of Interest (COI) between their own individual interests and the interests of AAI. For purposes of this policy, COI includes actual, apparent, and potential COIs.
- “Actual” COIs are those that present a situation in which the interests of AAI are unavoidably compromised.
- “Apparent” COIs arise in circumstances whereby a third party with knowledge of the relevant facts could reasonably believe that a COI may exist.
- “Potential” COIs are those that are foreseeable, but which have not yet occurred.
AAI requires that all AAI representatives must disclose any relationship that may bias their duties to AAI or which, if known, could give the perception of bias. These situations may include, but are not limited to:
- stock options or bond holdings in a for-profit corporation or self-directed pension plan
- receipt of royalties
- research grants, salary support, in-kind support
- employment (full- or part-time)
- consulting fees or other remuneration
- ownership or partnership
- positions of influence such as officer, board member, trustee, spokesperson of a for-profit or non-profit corporation/organization/entity
- speaker’s bureau
- member of a Scientific Advisory Group for a corporation
- other
